US Marine Raider Stiletto Tentatively Attributed To Medal Of Honor Winner Sgt R.E. Bush

A fine USMC Raider Stiletto with it’s original and correct sheath. The reverse of the sheath has what appears to be period details stamped into it, very faint and near impossible to photograph but reading “BUSH R.E. 1-4” which is suggestive of the original owner being Richard Early Bush who served in the 1st Battalion 4th Marine Regiment and was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Master Gunnery Sgt Richard Earl Bush (23/12/1924 to 07/06/2004) of the USMC who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the battle of Okinawa on 16 Apr 1945. He was still a Cpl at the time of the action during which he was seriously wounded whilst charging an enemy position. He was evacuated to a medical treatment Centre where he and his wounded colleagues came under attack. He used his body as a shield to protect his comrades from a grenade blast. He lay across the grenade - he lost several fingers and the sight of one eye in the blast.

The knife & sheath have clearly been carried and used. The blade shows a length of 7” and has a slight ‘cant’ to it, possibly from wear and being tied down to the leg. The hilt is mostly solid with what appears to be some small, stable cracks under the crossguard. Although I have no documentation to conclusively prove a link to R.E. Bush, the markings on the sheath are intriguing. Potentially an extremely important and historical Raider.
